On Halloween night at 9 pm we will broadcast a restaging of the classic war of the worlds broadcast. This radio play caused a great sensation when it was presented by Orson Welles and the Mercury theater company on the Air on October 30th, 1938. It is based on the classic science fiction novel of the same name by H.G. Wells.
We will broadcast a version of the play adapted by Howard Koch, produced by L.A Theatreworks, and starring Leonard Nimoy, Brent Spiner, John de Lancie, Jerry Hardin, Gates McFadden, Dwight Schultz, Armin Shimerman, and Wil Wheaton. These members of the cast of Star Trek and Star Trek the next generation do a bang up job restaging one of the sensational events of radio history!
If you listen to this broadcast, try to place yourself in shoes of an average american of the day. In the tense and fearful time before the start of World War II this play found fertile ground for it's seeds of fear and madness. it is estimated by historians that more than a million people who heard this ficional account of a martian invasion of earth believed it was real. There was a panic, and many people fled their homes or spent a tense night watching the skies with loaded guns, waiting for the war to come to them.
