Every now and then an artist comes to my attention that makes me stand up and notice. This time around it is Steven Graves. Steven has a new cd out, "Matter of Time," and man, it is good. I'm happy to be able to share some of it with you. I'm so excited that I got the opportunity to catch up with Steven on Friday, 8 June, I aired that conversation during "Something Special" (Fridays, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.).
Steven Graves is a(nother) one of those left coast musician that have sparked my interest. Oh, yea; for some reason I just seem to love that left coast sound.
From talking to Steven, I gather that his new cd, "Matter of Time," might seem to be sort of a testimonial of himself. Musically, "Matter of Time," reflects genuine ability of not only Steven but of his band, as well. It offers several different genres: Rock, Reggae, Country/Americana, and even Indian. Each genre is well represented, beautifully executed, and lyrically matched. It almost seems that this cd is what WHUS is all about: It symbolizes diversity and passion, as well as social consciousness.
In addition to this cd being quite a "musical journey," his passion comes blazing through, with emotional and feel-good lyrics, and in some cases, leaving you with a comfortable and pleasant tune to sing for the rest of the day: you know, sort of that stuck in your head song; but yea, in a good way. I listened to to this cd several times at first and I have to say, I like it ... I like it a lot! I especially like the diversity: three songs come to mind that are completely different, yet left me with a familiar feeling like I've known these songs all along.
One almost stand-alone cut is titled, "White Buffalo," a song co-written by Steven that is dedicated a passion of his. The song is dedicated to helping provide critical needs to Native American organizations in a grass-roots sort of way. In fact, 100% of all proceeds from the digital downloads of this single is donated to supporting these communities. (Good work, Steven!) http://stevengravesmusic.com/white-buffalo-project.html
My personal favorite is the title track, "Matter of Time." To me it offers every thing good about music wrapped in one tidy package. It's got that I feel good feel to it ... it features some nice pedal steel, and lyrics of hope. Ya know, as I write this, the tune "Saturday Night," may come in a close second. I almost wish I had a Saturday night show; I'd use that song as my anthem.
So, if you did, thanks for joining me Friday for "Something Special."
I'm almost sure that if you stop by 91.7 fm or WHUS.org on Friday's between 1:00 and 4:00 EDT, you just might tune in to 'Something Special.'
Peace.
