An indie alternative rock CD you may have missed, issued in 1994 on an obscure small label, Crazy Creek Records, is certainly worth more than a single “at bat”. The band is from the Southern California backyard of the Angels baseball team, and known as The RBIs.  The full length CD is self-titled. The personnel are songwriter, rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist, Karla Blume, sister Amy Blume on bass and harmony vocals, and Masato Enami on lead guitar. Jason Rarick and Peter Kesselman take turns on drums. The Blume sisters have a lot of  inherited talent. Father Dave was a jazz musician/pianist, record producer, and journalist. Their mother is folksinger songwriter Carolyn Hester.  The track listing is as follows:

Everything’s Okay

Rewind

Wanderin’

Feel Somebody

Shine

Right Where We Should Be

The Day Has Come

You’ll Stay

What I Did For Love

Groove It Good

Make Believe

When You Know It’s A Lie

Reprise

The majority of the songs that Karla wrote for this debut CD are medium to uptempo, and well suited for her vocals – her voice projects well and has good tone. The arrangements keep the listener interested and the lyrics are solid. See below for a sample – “When You Know It’s A Lie”.

Although The RBIs may be a little optimistic with their motto “Batting 1000 with every song”, several of the cuts hit a home run on my scorecard. Recommended tracks are “Everything’s Okay”, “Wanderin’, and “What I Did For Love”. You can find the RBIs at www.myspace.com/therbis
