Legendary zydeco musician Roy Carrier has died at the age of 63 of complications from lung cancer.
Roy Carrier formed his zydeco band The Night Rockers in 1961 at the age of 14. He reformed the band in 1965 and continued to play with them until his death. Roy also spent 16 years working full time on an offshore oil rig, an occupation he finally quit in 1989 to concentrate full time on his music. In 1980 he purchased an old roadhouse in his native Lawtell, Louisiana and christened it "The Offshore Lounge", which would become one of the most popular zydeco nightclubs in the state. He released four cassette tapes on the Lanore label from 1987-1992 and released nine more albums on CD from 1995-2006, most of them on Right On Records. His son Roy "Chubby" Carrier, Jr. is a successful zydeco musician and bandleader in his own right (Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band). Roy Carrier was a cousin of the legendary Clifton Chenier, "The King of Zydeco".
