The Covers Project
My introduction to Brit alternative/indie singer Tracey Thorn was not as half of "Everything But The Girl" but via an original tune "Seascape" included on "Poppies", the 1997 3CD set of peace songs (Dressed To Kill records). Her third solo CD "Love and its Opposite", released stateside on the Merge label on May 18, follows "Out of the Woods (2007) and "A Distant Shore" (1982). Recorded in Berlin and London, the CD consists of somewhat dark and melancholy, but eerily beautiful, songs about divorce and other midlife crisis relationships. - not hers, other peoples. Rosie Swash, reviewing for the Guardian, writes: "Part of the album's charm lies in Thorn's voice lending romance to drab details....cracking lines , witheringly delivered by Thorn, "I pull off my ring as I push my way in" ("Singles Bar")", her tune about a married woman playing the field. "Long White Dress" looking back to the beginning of a marriage, should receive its share of airplay.
Track listing:
- Oh, the Divorces
- Long White Dress
- Hormones
- Kentish Town
- Why Does The Wind
- You Arer A Lover
- Singles Bar
- Come On Home To Me
- Late In The Afternoon
- Swimming

The CD is musically sound, Tracey's fine vocals and songwriting, paired with help on percussion from Leo Taylor (The Invisibles) and guitar/bass work by Al Doyle (Hot Chip's), and well produced by Ewan Pearson, is a winning combination.
