CURRENT SHOW
A Late Cobblestone Walk
There is so very much great BG out there these days, each week, it seems like it's harder and harder to choose the tunes I'm going to play on the air. I've never been one of those radio hosts who pre-plans each song I might play on the air for weeks at a time; the sad fact is that I will, on occasion, go into the studio with an outline of songs or performers I'd like to play. These days, it's getting hard to even play the performers I might have written down on an outline because the simple fact is that there is just too much great music from which to choose. Isn't that a horrible problem to have? We'll keep up the "struggle," though...
On Sunday's show, my "to play" outline prompted me that I wanted to pay small tributes to a couple of classic country music performers whose work has often been covered in the BG world. This time around, it was a tune or two to mark the birthday of Country Music Hall of Famer, Hank Snow (born May 9, 1914), as well as the shared birthday of two members of a great brother-style country duo of the 1940s and 1950s who weren't brothers, but were, instead, brothers-in-law. Johnnie Wright (born May 13, 1914) and his singing partner, Jack Anglin (born May 13, 1916--died March 7, 1963) worked as "Johnnie & Jack," and they were credited for sort of introducing a definite "rhumba" flavor to a whole lot of their great music from the 1950s: tunes like "Poison Love" or "Ashes Of Love." Why do we showcase some of these classic country performers on a BG show? So many times, even to this day, BG performers seem to LOVE to cover the earlier material of some of these "vintage" country singers, so it seems the two forms of music kind of go hand-in-hand a bit. Hope you agree.
Last Sunday, Jim introduced a few tunes to you from the brand new recording from the pen of New Hampshire songwriter, Rick Lang. Rick's tunes have been recorded previously by performers such as Front Range, Paul Adkins & the Borderline Band, and the Lonesome River Band. Now, the Rural Rhythm Christian label has released a great CD showcasing fourteen gospel tunes that Rick has written called, "Look To The Light: Songs Of Faith From The Pen Of Rick Lang." While Rick himself doesn't perform on the CD, there is some top-notch talent to be heard interpreting Rick's songs, including Barry Scott, Dale Ann Bradley, Jeff Parker, John Miller, Junior Sisk, and Russell Moore, as well as musicians like Jesse Brock and Roger Williams. Top notch. We're going to try to get Rick on the air with us sometime soon to talk about this fine new recording.
Hope you had a chance to listen to our special Bluegrass edition of the "Fiat Flux" last Saturday, May 8th. We had a great time with our guests, the Spinney Brothers and David Peterson, and we'll be looking for more opportunities to bring you some live BG music in future shows. If you'd like to see a few photos taken in the studio during "Fiat Flux," visit our "Bluegrass Cafe" blog post.
Join Jim next week for more great Bluegrass -- I'm sure he'll have no problems finding plenty of it to play for you...
