For Foals' follow up to their 2008 debut LP "Antidotes," Foals jumped right on the current electro-rock trend. Unlike their previous spastic, dancey, post-punk debut, "Total Life Forever" trades in the punk edge for an atmospheric, bliss-pop quality that is reminiscent of more recent Animal Collective, Delorean, and other more electronically centered artists, while staying dancable.
The first half of "Total Life Forever" is an obvious progression from Foals' previous sound. Their love of horns has crossed onto the new LP, and the first few tracks on the album are edgier than the latter half of the album, as it retains Foals' punchy basslines and dancey guitar ("Miami" is a perfect example of this). As the album progresses however, tracks become more atmospheric. "2 Trees" is a swirling of guitars, echoing vocals, and piercing snare; and "Black Gold" sits in a similar vein.
For fans of Foals' first LP, "Total Life Forever" won't be a disappointment. Whether it will win over new fans in a musical climate saturated with dancable rock, and swirling electronica remains to be seen I guess. I personally won't be sitting in anticipation waiting for them to come around, but hey, thats just one man's opinion.
