Last weekend, the big ROMP -- River of Music Party -- festival was held in Owensboro, Kentucky. This is an annual festival, and one of the main fundraisers for Owensboro's International Bluegrass Music Museum (IBMM). While I haven't yet been to either the museum or the festival, I almost felt like I had after viewing photos taken there by CT Bluegrasser (and former host of "The Magic Of Bluegrass" on WHUS), Cathy Bumgarner Day. Cathy had her picture taken with several performers who've been recognized as "Pioneers Of Bluegrass" by IBMM, including New Englanders Herb Applin (now working with the Old Time Bluegrass Singers) and Hazel & Mac McGee (of New Hampshire's White Mountain Bluegrass). These photos provided a bit of inspiration for me, as I took a few moments on Sunday's show to play some music from a few of the New England Pioneers: Herb Applin, Hazel & Mac McGee, Fred Pike, Sam Tidwell, and Joe Val. If you're not familiar with music made by these greats through the years...well, we have some work to do on the "BG Cafe."
Thanks to Cathy for letting us share some of her photos with Herb, Hazel & Mac, and non-New Englander, Curly Seckler. Great stuff!
New music was a big part of Sunday's show, too, as we shared new music from forthcoming projects by Rhonda Vincent, as well as a duet project from Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford; new gospel music from Barry Scott & Second Wind and Connecticut's Gallagher Family Band; and something from Pennsylvania band, Louie Setzer & the Appalachian Mountain Boys.
And we got to give away a couple of passes to an upcoming one-day festival in Rangeley, Maine. The Saddleback Mountain Bluegrass Festival happens on Saturday, August 7th, and boasts a lineup that includes the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, the Infamous Stringdusters, and the Del McCoury Band. Jim will have a couple more passes to give away this week...be sure to listen in for a chance to win!
Thanks for your continued support of the program...it's always appreciated!
