Okay, so let's get this out of the way. Yes, I am an atheist, yes I do have general contempt for religion and the harm it has done to the world. However, this does not make a difference in my opinion on this subject. Now to the main point.
It was once believed that when you sneeze, your soul falls out of your body, and can be attacked by demons. To save people from this, it became the custom to "bless" the soul and protect it from demons. If anyone has ever played Doom, they know this is much less effective than a high powered firearm, but I guess it was too inconvenient to fire weapons at random whenever someone sneezed. Still, if someone wants to protect my soul, I'd prefer if they'd do it right.
The point is, I have many religious friends, none of which believe their sould fall out when they sneeze due to advances in science which explain why we sneeze (wasn't really a hard question but better safe than sorry I guess). So no matter what your beliefs are (aside from those who still believe their souls fall out), it is generally an insult to anyones intelligence to bless a soul that doesn't fall out whenever we sneeze to get attacked by demons who aren't there and are more suceptible to guns anyway.
