I found four new CDs this month that I wish to share with you. "Balancing Act" by Natasha Borzilova; "Eight Short Stories" by the Marc Brenken-Christian Kappe Quartet; "The Beat Goes On" by Emilie-Claire Barlow; and "Sex With An X" by The Vaselines.

Natasha Borzilova – "Balancing Act"

Track listing :

Ghost

Anything At All

Water and Wood

Balancing Act

Fine Print

Zip It

Want You To Stay

Paper Wings

End of September

Power’s In Her Hands

Rechka

An excellent CD throughout, her sophomore solo release, following “Cheap Escape” (2008)  – Natasha is former lead singer of the now defunct group “Bering Strait”. Original gentle open and airy songs with well thought lyrics, all in English except the last track, a traditional Russian folk song titled Rechka (The River). "Rechka", “Water and Wood” and “Want You To Stay” are my favorites.  Natasha’s CD will probably be one of my top 10 albums of the year. RIYL: Tori Amos

Marc Brenken – Christian Kappe Quartet – Eight Short Stories

 Track listing:

Toy Train Song

Strumyk

El Gaucho Solitario

Wespennest

The Moon, The Sky

Now Or Never

Der Kristall

Das Rote Kleid

Experimental acoustic jazz instrumentals form Essen/Berlin Germany pianist and composer. Mostly mellow tunes, will make a nice background sitting around a warm fire sipping liquors. Each track is expressive and well executed. The CD was actually released in 2006, but is new to us this month. I guess it took awhile to cross the pond.

A fine Canadian jazz singer, born June 6, 1976, to professional musician parents. Since issuing her first CD in 1998, she is prolific, this is her eighth release. Exquisite vocals with great accompaniment, there is a wide variety of music on this release, from Bachrach to Sadaka to Dylan to Buffy Sainte-Marie, something for everybody. All by the 2008 National Jazz Awards “Female Vocalist of the Year” You will certainly enjoy her renditions of these songs..

It took almost 20 years, but here is the second release (the first was "Dum Dum") from the indie pop band from Glasgow, Scotland, comprised of Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee. The founding members  remained musically active throughout the intervening years: the former with Captain America aka Eugenius and finally as a solo artist;  McKee with Painkillers and Suckle. Eugene and Frances collaborated intermittently   during this time. They toured jointly and played a few of the old songs together, then decided to get back into the studio. It is a album worth the wait; their new songs are quite entertaining and will receive their share of airplay. Good clean smut, with a twist of bitter.
