The John Funkhouser Trio is playing The Buttonwood Tree tonight.  They stopped by WHUS on their way... played some music... engaged in some witty banter with yours truly.

Their CD is called "Time", which implies (and fulfills) a promise of time-signature experimentation, but is sooooo much more.

While they set up, I spun a couple of suites from John's earlier CD "Funkhouse II" (with Blake Lindberg and Matt Pavolka).

  • Suite #2 (10 Short Improvised Pieces) - John Funkhouser - Funkhouse II
  • Back Porch - John Funkhouser - Funkhouse II

John and I spoke, here... you'll have to wait to hear that for when I get the files uploaded

  • Prelude & Fugue in A minor - John Funkhouser Trio - Time

From here on out, it's live, baby!

  • Dyin' Nation / Emancipation - John Funkhouser Trio - LIVE IN-STUDIO (From "Time")
  • Big Five - John Funkhouser Trio - LIVE IN-STUDIO (From Greg Loughman's CD "Sinistral")

The four of us spoke, here... you'll have to wait (see above).

  • Green Dolphin Street - John Funkhouser Trio - LIVE IN-STUDIO

I'd forgotten how beautiful Green Dolphin Street is... maybe that's because it hasn't been re-worked lately?  Besides playing this in a different time signature, they created all kinds of space within its structure... I'd bet you'll hear this at The Buttonwood Tree, tonight.

See you there!
