There are some very notable concerts/gigs (I'll explain the difference) coming up in the area (give or take).
Avant-Garde Lovers: The Magic Triangle jazz series, this year, features the same rhythm section for each of the triangle's sides... or corners... depends on your point of view, I imagine. Arguably the best rhythm section in modern jazz, William Parker and Hamid Drake are performing in three different contexts. In February, they were in trio with Konrad "Conny" Bauer, the German trombonist. This week (Thursday, 3/25 at 8PM) they will be joined by the other members of The Raining on the Moon Sextet. In April, Hamid and William will be joined by Evan Parker (no relation). Well worth the drive to Amherst. (This is a "concert").
Straight-Ahead-Jazz Lovers: The Jazz Underground, in New London, will host The John Funkhouser Trio, this Saturday night at 8PM. John has twice been an on-air guest on Gravity and Chaos (via phone) and this is an excellent opportunity to see/hear real-but-accessible jazz in a venu that sells Belgian beers (a personal favorite). (This is a "gig").
Coming Next Week: Joe Fonda at The Buttonwood Tree.
