Well, that title is a bit obvious, but the fact remains. Black Thought, of Roots fame, is one of the most skilled MCs in the game, if not ever. We always have this argument on Boombox from the Boondox. I'm a huge Roots fan, bigger than most. Chum, my fearless DJ, respects the Roots, but feels that Thought is underrated (and the Roots overrated). Whatever our disagreement (I'm a ?uestlove kool-aid drinker), the fact remains, Black Thought is a force to be reckoned with.
Here he is in a track from the 2006 album "Jay Stay Paid," a tribute album whose proceeds (actually, this time) go to J Dilla's family, including Ma Dukes. The whole system with royalties for deceased artist's families is crazy. I heard her speak at a CMJ conference a few years ago along with reps from the Marley estate and some others, but that's another discussion for another day. This track is called "Reality TV." It is dope.
Still not convinced? Head over to our friends at OkayPlayer, who have got at least 10 minutes of Thought's straight freestyle on Tony Touch's J Dilla Tribute Show. If you still aren't feeling it, then you have something wrong with your ears. Before I leave, check out the new title track from The Roots upcoming album, How I Got Over (which was supposed to come out a few times already...we're still waiting). It's definitely is something new for them, but I like it the more I listen to it:
