These talented horn players from the UK, have been sidemen in various other groups, but this is their first album as leaders. Its an impressive outing with a great band. I have seen these players at 55Bar in NYC a couple of times, and they are very impressive. Brad plays trumpet and flugelhorn, while Elliot plays trombone and bass trumpet. Elliot has killer chops on the 'bone, perhaps one of the best I have ever heard.

mason brothersThis is hard-bop at its best with a top notch band. Besides Brad and Elliot on trumpet and trombone, we have Chris Potter on tenor sax, Gil Goldstien on piano, Scott Coley on bass and Antonio Sanchez hittin' the drums. These cats all burn it up.

Of particular note is a track called Stage Pints. The title is an anagram for Coltrane's Giant Steps. It is appropriately named as they play the melody backwards using the original rhythm and at the end alternate between 4/4 and 3/4 time. That's according to the liner notes.

I highly recommend this album. Listen to my show on Saturday 6-8PM here on WHUS as I will be giving this CD lots of airplay.

Check out this YouTube from the recording studio of this album in production.
