Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer, and summer means a lot of good albums are coming out along with awesome summer tours. A couple of my favorite bands have recently put some free downloads up on their websites, so I thought I would share those with you all.
Minus the Bear just released a free digital EP called Hold Me Down, the name of their second single off their 2010 album Omni. The EP features six songs, including its title track, three live songs, a remix of Omni's first single "My Time," as well as a brand new song called "Broken China." Even though the EP only has one new song on it, "Broken China" is on par with some of the more memorable songs off Omni such as "Into the Mirror," and it's free so why not add it to your music collection? You can download Hold Me Down on Minus the Bear's website.
Toronto's Fucked Up will be releasing their third full-length album, David Comes to Life, on June 7th via Matador Records, but in the meantime you can get a head start listening to a few of the tracks. The follow-up to 2008's The Chemistry of Common Life, which won the Polaris Music Prize in 2009, David Comes to Life has been described as a "rock opera," an unusual endeavor for a punk band. The album takes the form of a love story, and follows the character David and his relationship with Veronica. The band has posted four of the album's seventeen songs up for download on their website, as well as lyrics to all the songs and a video of the band discussing the album. Judging from the first four songs that have been released, I'm fairly sure that this will end up being one of my favorite albums of 2011.
And now I will leave you with a music video - The Gaslight Anthem just released a video for their song "Bring It On" off of their third album, American Slang. It is a song about divorce, and as my parents divorced when I was very young I like songs like these a lot. You can check that out here. So enjoy the music, eat a lot of good food this weekend, be careful playing with fireworks, and make sure to tune into Insomniac Jams tonight and every Friday night from 10pm-midnight. :)
