CURRENT SHOW
Handsome, Well-Dressed Radio
While we might like to think that listening to the "BG Cafe" on Sundays from 4-7PM is one of your top weekend priorities...well, we know that's just not quite true. Some folks will tell you that there is no better way to experience Bluegrass than to hear it live, and you can certainly do that every Sunday night at the Firebox Restaurant in Hartford. If you've not yet had a chance to visit the Firebox on a Sunday night, you may want to put a trip there on your "to do" list.
For many years, Nick Novia has been a pretty well-known BG musician in Connecticut, playing in bands such as GrassRoutes, TrueGrass, and Big Apple'achia. Sometime in the middle of 2008, Nick was approached by Jason Collin, who was then chef at the Firebox. Collin had worked in Cambridge, MA before coming to the Firebox, and while there, was a frequent visitor to Cambridge's Cantab Lounge, where live Bluegrass music is featured every Tuesday evening. Sunday nights were sort of quiet at the Firebox, so Collin suggested to the Firebox owners that they might try bringing in some Bluegrass music. A simple Web search led Collin to Nick Novia, who then contacted his picking buddy and bandmate, Colchester's Joe DeLillo, and the two set out to book some Bluegrass music at the Firebox on Sunday nights.
The first Firebox Bluegrass show happened in October of 2008, and featured different throw-together bands arranged by Nick and Joe. Word started to get out that the Firebox was a great place to be on Sunday nights, and soon, some pretty well-known BG performers were calling Nick to inquire about playing there. Before long, performers such as David Davis, Leigh Gibson, Karl Shiflett, and the Rowan Brothers were playing at the Firebox, along with plenty of BG bands from all over New England, such as ShoreGrass, CrossOver, GrassRoutes, Acoustic Blue, the Stillhouse Jammers, Nick Anderson & Shady Creek, the Old Time Bluegrass Singers, and a whole bunch more.
While there is no cover charge to enjoy live BG at the Firebox, there is a boot passed around at every show. Plus, when you go, you'll want to sample something from the fine Firebox menu. The music begins at 5PM and runs until about 8PM. For more information, call Nick at (203)650-3492 or send him email at nnovia@gmail.com. The Firebox is located at 539 Broad Street in Hartford.
