ON AIR
There are way too many festivals on the calendar but I’ll give you my take on a few of them.
Because it starts on June 17 and runs through June 19 I’ll mention the Boston Irish Festival first. As their Facebook page says: Something for Everyone! Over 200 Entertainers on 6 Stages, Over 25 Merchant and Food Vendors, Amusements, Gaelic Sports, Dancing and More!! The event takes place at the Irish Cultural Centre of New England grounds, 200 New Boston Drive,
Canton, MA 02021-2825 For further information see:www.bostonirishfestival.info/ I took in this festival two or three years ago and had a fine time; it is family friendly with a broad roster of entertainers.
On June 23 I’ll be heading back to the Altamont Fairgrounds, near Albany NY, for another edition of the Old Songs Festival. This event takes place June 23-25. For Festival details see www.oldsongs.org/festival/ Also you can check out my review at http://www.whus.org/blog.cfm?blogID=428
Closely following the Old Songs reprise is the Greater New Bedford Summerfest, July 2nd and 3rd: www.newbedfordsummerfest.com This is one of the best events in New England. See the performer list here: www.newbedfordsummerfest.com/performers.html.
The Philadelphia Folk Festival celebrates its Fiftieth this year, August 18-21. All the details are at: www.pfs.org/folk-festival Performers include Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush and many more. The Celtic presence will include the Battlefield Band also Burning Bridget Cleary. I’ll be there; I’ve volounteered for about 15 years now, helping to set up the camping area in particular.
The last Festival I’ll mention here is the annual New Hampshire Highland Games on Loon Mountain, Lincoln NH, September 16-18. This event is as Scottish as they come. Pipe Bands galore, tartan everywhere. If you have even just one drop of Scottish blood you’ll find a Clan Tent where you’ll be welcomed. Did I mention the Whisky Tastings? And the Sheep Dog events? Once again the Games will host the greatest Scottish Heavy Events athletes from around the world; they will gather for the ultimate prize in Scottish Highland Games, to become World Champion. I’ve always enjoyed my visits to Loon Mountain Here’s the link for all you might want to know: www.nhscot.org
Have a great summer everyone.
