After spending almost 35 years applying computers to the management of information, principally in libraries, Joe Cavanagh retired to Connecticut in 1996. In the Fall of that year he took and passed the WHUS training course and in the following semester was given the opportunity to program Celtic music on air. In thirteen years on the staff of WHUS Radio Joe has also featured World Music programming, especially roots music from the northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Occasionally Joe has also brought some, but by no means all, of his various musical interests to the air at WHUS. These special interests include Live Looping, the Chapman Stick, music to accompany Silent Movies, the Band-Organ music of the Carousel, and also music from the Gaelic tradition of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The latter interest has found expression in a six-hour Internet offering at www.live365.com/GaelSong. Joe was born in England, into an Irish family which raised him in Scotland! He has lived in the United States since 1968 and became a citizen in 1984. If asked about his own musical talents Joe will say that he is a student of the fiddle, the mandolin, the whistle, and the harmonica – and master of none of these
