CURRENT SHOW
Dark Side of the Highway
" Have you forsaken your radio? Only rock out to CDs and iPod in the car? Wonder at the embarrassing state of commercial hip hop and rock?
Well, fear no more because from 11pm Sunday to 1am Monday on 91.7 FM WHUS-Storrs The Hardcore Gentlemen bring you the hottest jams you've never heard. (If you have, more power to you.)
Mellon Colin (aka DJ Gris-Gris) & Jimbo (aka The DJ With No Name) dig through the crates each week to bring the most fiery cornucopia of hip hop, indie, jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, punk, and voodoo tracks we can get our hands on. Living for every moment we spend in the studio, the Dynamic Dillatantes strive to challenge notions of genre and status quo with our musical, political, and sports banter, special guest appearances, and interviews with underground artists. The mission of The Sophisticated Animals is to bring attention to musical artists we find criminally underrated, underplayed, and unrecognized. In fact, you can listen live and find each of our comprehensive playlists and listen live @ http://www.whus.org or access virtually all of our past shows @ http://www.go-nutz.com/melloncolin/bin after a short registration.
But at the end of the day ourselves (Mellon Colin, Jimbo, & the beautiful DJ Rose) are just a few tea heads and sensitive poets looking to score our radio fix week in and week out by playing our favorite tracks and running our mouths. We don't take ourselves all that seriously, but we do take our work seriously and value every new listener we gain. Make sure to tune in! (Don't worry - we'll remind you when we're on.)"
The show will be dedicated to playing music that demonstrates how strong and tough and cool I am. I'll play a variety of musical styles, and each show will typically be centered around a theme, mood, or genre.
Rap minus the lies and fakes.
The show will play a variety of music. Most material will be some form of rock that has been released recently. Genres will range from lyric-less post-rock, to soft acoustic, to various forms of indie. We will be avoiding main-stream music for the most part and try to shed light on some relatively "hidden talent."
The Munchies is a music based show with a broad range of genres of music that is easy to sit back and relax to. It will include music news, upcoming concerts in the area, munchie recipe of the week, and other random facts and trivia.
Tune in to The Mad Liberators for experimental and alternative hip-hop cuts from DJ Brother Abstract and DJ Dark Flow. In this late night radio show, expect psychedelic soundscapes that span multiple genres. From dub, jazz and avante-garde music, The Mad Liberators is designed to expand musical horizons and put listeners on a fantastic musical journey.
Featuring the hottest and newest electronic tracks from around the globe, ranging from trance, house, and even dubstep, there’s a little something for everyone. It’s music that’s sure to light up the dance floor!
music from the 1990s interwound with modern music thats similar, and events going on on UConn and nearby
During Quiet Hours, listeners will explore late night soundscapes that stimulate the mind and relax the nerves. Listeners will hear a variety of music from electronica to jazz anything that makes for a proper night cap"
gonna throw some heavy metal at you and a little of everything else but the kicthen sink... your gonna hear everything from Kittie to Stevie Ray Vaughn
With a fusion of musical inspiration that ranges from country swing to death metal to the heart and organs of dark folk and old bluegrass, a listen to "Dark Side of the Highway" evokes the dreamscape of leading a steel breeze into an Old West gunfight, knowing you're probably going to die but flirting with the ruse of hope without redemption's promise; maybe even the idea that an eternal Hell of heartfelt music might warrant the compromise of not sitting on a cloud forever playing trite pop songs on a three string lyre. Feel the burn of whiskey, the glow of mortality at the tip of each cigarette as life's soundless winds abandon the heart and tease the mind insane. Spend the early hours with a spurned companion, the memory of falling apart. Dissipate the burden. Realize that the temptations surrendered to will inevitably grant freedom to every wretched soul.
A mixture of Urban underground music from the Carrabean Islands especialy from Puerto Rico, musics include Latin Hip Hop and Reggaeton.
Play hip hop that is not commercial. My goals are to play classic hip hop songs from the 80's and 90's, as well as play good underground hip hop or any hip hop that is not main stream that still keeps the fundamentals of pure hip hop. I also will play more recent artist such as kanye west, jay z, etc.., however play songs from their albums, mixtapes, etc.. that did not make it on radio but yet were very good. I also plan to dj live on certain occasions. My overall goal is to bridge the gap between very good old hip hop, and good hip hop that is still being made and let their music be heard. Hip hop is not dead despite how rappers go through great lengths to sell out. Hopefully my show can fight that stereotype.
On my show, I will delve into various social and political issues that do not receive attention from the mass media. Specifically the 2012 elections, GMO food, the FDA, US military interventions, the Occupy Movement, as well as skirmishes and progress towards peace in the Middle East. The focus of my show is transparency and accountability for crooked politicians and other powerful individuals. Caller participation is encouraged. Requests for almost any genre of music are accepted.
RAH! Rock, Alternative & Hardcore show; I will attempt to represent both sides of the Atlantic (USA+Europe) through new music in a pointless battle for victory.
"Rock as an Art Form
Radio Alarm will attempt to wake you up to the newest and latest beats. To enable you to face the new day with a song and some words of interest. We will look at what is Rock Music in the grand scheme of things and how does it expand what we call ""culture"". The Radio Alarm program will be your guide to artists that perform and/or compose music as well as musicians that work in other mediums. We will listen to music that is current (experimental pop / IDM / Alternative / Indie) as well as some Classic Rock that still influences others artists and may be considered the foundation of this ever growing medium of Art that is commonly know as Rock and Roll Music. We will play some of these Classic Rock musicians who are still recording and performing today. We will also play the best of New York City's finest as well as some Brit-Pop. Radio Alarm will also keep you in the know of current art exhibits, performances etc. on the UCONN campus and in the tri-state area."
Psychedelic and Garage Rock from the 60s and 70s with the occasional modern track thrown in for good measure. Music from all over the world that will bend you mind on a sonic journey.
"Crystal Hayes joined WHUS as a community staff member in 2007.
Crystal programs and hosts ""The RustyString Cafe':"" AOR (album-oriented rock) of the 60s, 70s and early 80s that focuses on guitar-centered music, including the music of the Grateful Dead (and friends) and Chris Whitley.

""Doing radio the way it use to be; the way it should be."" "
20th Century Rock covers the music from the 1960's to 2000. It's a historical perspective of how rock and roll has evolved. It pays homage to the artists and songwriters that have contributed across the decades.
We will be presenting stories with a feminist twist; we’ll be telling you what’s what that’s going on in the news regarding equality and justice for people of all races, genders and classes. In addition, we will discuss progressive issues, have interviews, and play music.
The journey continues with music that raises the banner for hope, possibility and change. NOT a religious show per se but one that seeks to touch the spirituality in us. The occassional live AA meeting, guests from the area who have a purpose, and Give us this day our daily Van will return. Stay tuned for a connection to the Ct. Reperatory Theatre.
"The show will be a global musical journey exploring the roots and contemporary branches of African-derived/ influenced music. In most instances, such as with the case of Ska and Reggae, the connection of the music played to Africa will be obvious. In the case of selections of so-called Jazz music, for example, or that of Rhythm and Blues and Hip Hop, the connection may seem more tenuous. This is deliberate. It is my heartfelt belief and experience that the extent of global African musical influence is highly under-appreciated.
There will also be a periodic segment, once a month, called ""Drummer's Almanac"" that will feature interviews with master musicians and artists, conducted over the phone, live in the studio or pre-recorded."

Rock and roll all over. A-Z and in between. We will play a little of everything and stir it up!
Go Funk Yourself! is a one hour jam-packed (yes, pun intended) broadcast filled with jam, jazz, electronica, indie rock, and none other than the original funk.
A mercurial mix of clashes and bangs, whirs and clicks, whoops and hollers, sighs and whispers.
An exploration of all things Celtic, featuring traditional music with a modern treatment and new tunes played in traditional style.
We plan to play music the majority of the time, with very short mike breaks. Sarah prefers indieish stuff while Shane is more of a DubStep guy, so hopefully the show will be an eclectic mix of genres. Favorite bands include: Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz, Four Tet, Bonobo Deadmau5 etc.
A tribute to the Great American Songbook. Songs written between the 20's and 40's, by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, etc. The "melody era" according to Johnny Mercer. I feature the singers of these great songs from the Big Band Era all the way up till today with new singers who are still recording these great tunes. I interview new singers on occasion , and, also, play instrumental recordings of these songs.
R&B hit songs from today , and in the past as well as international R&B artists
Scandinavia To San Diego - A wide variety of world free form music, mostly acoustic, from many genres blended and presented to you by DJ Frank. A mix of celtic, euro-pop, folk, jazz, rock and blues for your listening pleasure. The end of the show features a "Little Slice of Americana", because it's all world music. Check out Franks' weekly blog for information about the songs and artists.
Although I wont be sticking to any one genre of music, I'll be drawing most heavily from experimental electronica, and contemporary "indie" rock bands and artists such as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Wilco, Devendra Banhart, and Tom Waits. Various other artists such as New Order, Erik Satie, and Blossom Dearie will most likely be making appearances. I'll will be avoiding genres such as contemporary country, dubstep, top 40 pop, aggressive rap, and heavy metal (black metal, however, I might dip into). Thanks!
A pop retrospective, from the 1960s onward
A delicious Indie cake layered with Electro frosting and some Hip hop sprinkles on top
the show usually features only NEW Blues. and at times have Live In-Studio artist.
"Mostly rock (alternative, classic, punk, whatever), with fun little sprinkles of metal, ska, blues, jazz, electronica, grunge, alternative pop, hip-hop and... well, Sinatra and pre-1940s country. To put it briefly: whatever strikes my fancy that day goes up on your airwaves.
You'll probably hear something you like, and maybe you'll hear some stuff that you've never heard before. It's a good time."
Sports talk show! Uconn and National scene
From Jazz masters of past and present to emerging new artists performing modern jazz and fusion. NO smooth jazz here!
"Now in its 33nd year, The Sunday Night Folk Festival tries to cover a lot of musical ground in 3 hours: there's always new music in all the micro-genres; there are musical guests; concerts and festivals are previewed; and what with folk music being so thematic, there are always song-sets based on current events, holidays, weather, and, occasionally, whim. And of course the Fabulous Folk Calendar alerts you to performances by your favorites, somewhere around 9pm.
It's even better than that time you got caught wearing your girlfriend's panties.
World Radio Primetime is a showcase of both traditional and modern genres from all over the world, such as latin rock, bhangra, highlife, forró, reggae, euro-pop, gypsy, tsugaru-jamisen, and more!
Join your hosts Uncle Todd & The Captain to get Eastern Connecticut's biggest and best slice of Americana, Alt-Country and Roots music.
These blues will do your heart good, so take a trip down to the Transfer Station. You never know who'll stop by for an interview or some great live music. But you can always count on great blues that will make you laugh, think a little, and mostly just dig the blues. As Charlie Musselwhite told me, "The blues is your buddy in good time and your comforter in bad times, but it's never shallow; it's deep!".
Pushing The Envelope features the finest in the outer realms of contemporary music. From the worlds of classical, rock, jazz, ambient, electro-acoustic, etc., etc., etc., with a healthy dollop of new and classic progressive rock.
Hear Jason McMullan read works adventure, suspense, and imagination that are in the public domain!
The Black Box is the two hour journey through the depraved mind of Nick Stevens and his rotating cohort of co-hosts.
"This show will be split into two shows:
The first will be a what's new in music, including live performances and interviews.
The second will be a non-computer show, so no mp3. Only tapes, vinyl, live performance, etc. Varying genres."
Cody Lee plays classic and progressive rock with the occasional intrusion of ska and whatever else seems like a good idea at the time.
Songs about feelings and songs about forgetting what that feels like.
Where classic rock meets new influences
Misanthrope plays bad music under the impression that it qualifies as musical taste.
